Portrait of Captain William Peere Williams, forward-facing with his head turned to the right. The subject stands with his left hand in a fist, resting on his hip and his right arm down by his side, holding a hat. The captain wears a naval uniform with breeches, a white cravat and a waistcoat, over which he wears a long coat with lapels and embroidered ornamentation around the collar and cuffs. Hung from his left hip, in a low position, is a sword in a scabbard. A seascape and a coastline of gently curving hills can be seen in the background.
