Captain Le Couteur is depicted on board a ship with a view through the stern window of shipping off the islands of Herm and Jethou. The Captain is shown seated by a world globe with chart in hand. On the ship's table with solid raised gallery are a sextant, telescope and other navigational instruments. Captain Le Couteur owned a Brig called the 'Adelaide', 240 tons and built in Guernsey in 1830. Le Couteur sailed this ship to Brazil, Demerara and the West Indies.
