Joseph Boulderson (1764–1828) was the third son of John Phillips Boulderson, who had a very successful career as captain of a Falmouth Packet Ship delivering mail to the West Indies and America. Joseph went to sea aged about 12, very probably in that same packet ship which was by then captained by his eldest brother. He joined the East India Company in 1785 and rose through the ranks, in 1792 being appointed captain of the ‘Marquis of Lansdowne’ which traded between London and Calcutta. Like the captains of other East Indiamen Joseph Boulderson indulged in private trading, the profits of which were much greater than the wages paid to him as captain. In 1804 he was appointed as the first superintendant of the brand new London Docks at Wapping.
