The sitter, who belonged to the Royal Irish Fusiliers, was killed in action during the withdrawal of troops from the River Dendre in Belgium on 19th May 1940, aged 24. He is buried in the Outer Communal Cemetery at Ninove, Arrondissement Aalst, East Flanders (Oost-Vlaanderen), Belgium (Grave 264).

Jefferies was awarded the Best Cadet's Sword of Honour and the gold Sovereign's Medal at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. The Royal Irish Fusiliers’ website states: ‘He was awarded both prizes in 1936 by King Edward VIII, who was King for only a few months before his abdication. These are the only prizes he presented and both are on display in the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum.’
