This is a portrait of the artist's father, Canon Nugent Wade. Born in Dublin, he was the Rector of St Anne's Church, Soho, London from 1846 to 1890. From 1872 until his death he was the Canon of Bristol and is buried in the graveyard of the old Bishop’s Palace, Bristol.
