The Falklands Conflict 1982. The P & O cruise ship 'Canberra' was cruising in the Mediterranean when she was requisitioned for the British Task Force heading to the South Atlantic to free the Falklands Islands from their Argentinian invaders. She was converted into a troop ship and given two helicopter landing pads. During the conflict, she held Argentinian prisoners of war. Following the Argentinian surrender, she embarked 2500 men of commando brigades for return to the UK. This is the scene at 10am on Sunday 11 June as she approaches Southampton dockhead, to be greeted by the Prince of Wales and many senior officers. The welcome, both on the quay and afloat, awaiting the ship and her company was one which few arrivals can have experienced.
