Cordelia Oliver attended the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1940–1944 and in her graduating year she won the prestigious Guthrie Prize for painting. This painting features the Townhead area of Glasgow, not far from the GSA, where her contemporary Joan Eardley also chose to work. In later years Oliver was best remembered for being The Guardian's chief art and theatre critic in Scotland – a role she held for twenty-five years. She was also a contributor to a host of other newspapers and journals and the author of a number of books.

This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
