This shows the Forum in Rome. Until the nineteenth century it was a grassy open space with ancient monuments visible here and there. For many centuries it was a cattle market, hence the title ‘Campo Vaccino’ – ‘cattle field’. This painting depicts a market with more than just cows on sale – under an awning on the left-hand side there are women selling fruit and vegetables.
