Portrait of a gentleman incorrectly identified as Robert Cromwell, the father of the Lord Protector. The internal evidence of the style of dress makes the identification as Robert Cromwell impossible, but the error has been propounded for a very long time, since the sitter had been identified as Robert Cromwell as early as 1824.
