Born in Southampton of Welsh parents, Jones studied at Hornsey and the Royal College. He recalled: 'Throughout my work I've played with devices to convey movement. In this one a sequence of colour juxtapositions allows the eye to shunt slowly across the canvas. The analogy is to the London traffic jams, where basically everyone is moving in one direction but somehow or other it all shunts backwards and forwards because they are all going at different speeds and moving at different times'.
