A tall stone cross rising from an octagonal base, flanked by a curving wall on which are two rectangular bronze panels by sculptor Hermon Cawthra. The compositions on the panels show a procession of military and civilian figures. On the left panel is a depiction of members of the three armed forces, and also a female nurse. In the centre of the panel soldiers carry a stretcher with a wounded soldier. The panel on the right-hand side depicts the Home Front with various civilian occupations represented including coal mining, engineering, carpentry and munitions. The memorial was unveiled by the Earl of Derby in 1924.
