A carved and gilt wooden sculpture of Buddha on a three-tiered red base, originally from Burma. Buddha is positioned in the 'Bhumisparsha mudra', or 'Subduing Mara', 'Calling the Earth to Witness' gesture, which symbolises enlightenment, steadfastness and imperturbability. He sits cross-legged in the full-lotus position, with his right hand touching the ground with his fingertips and his left hand palm up in his lap. His hair is arranged in a topknot (ushnisha), he has long ear lobes and his robes are indicated with shallow indentations on the torso, ankles, left knee, and left wrist. The face has emphasised features, particularly his prominent mouth and half-closed eyelids. According to the accession register, this sculpture was from the Burmese king's palace in Mandalay.
