At first glance this painting, with its limited palette of earth colours, greys, blacks and ivory whites, appears to be a non-representational arrangement of forms and textures. However, this refined and sophisticated image is rooted in gritty urban subject matter. Clough developed a highly original and personal abstract language with which to distil the essence of transient urban and industrial spaces. Taking the particular and localised and turning it into something large and generalised, she would create close-ups of her source material - building sites, industrial tips, machine parts and industrial wastelands, claiming, "I like paintings that say a small thing edgily."
