In 1957, the year he painted 'Brown Still Life', Scott was commissioned to work a vast mural, 46 feet long, for Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry. As a result of working on this scale the abstract quality of his painting developed a new sense of poise and monumentality. In his subsequent painting Scott introduced abstract shapes that are cut by the edge of the canvas, giving the impression that they may form part of a larger work. In 'Brown Still Life' he employed an austerely limited tonal range of brown, black and grey to accentuate the newly-simplified abstract shapes of the saucepan and bowl. In 1953 Scott travelled to New York where he was impressed by the raw vitality of Abstract Expressionism. The visit, however, reaffirmed his links with the European tradition of Chardin and Cézanne and strengthened his belief in the importance of line and composition.
