Samuel Bough, born in Carlisle, was originally a scene painter but by 1850s was painting marine art. In 1855 he moved to Edinburgh where he died. This is a dramatic picture, yet perhaps somewhat sad, as the emigrants depicted are leaving their homeland, forever.
