The city authorities had suspected that there might be trouble when Reformers had held public meetings in Queen Square to prepare for Bristol Recorder Sir Charles Wetherell's annual visit. Wetherell had voted against the Reform Bill in Parliament. The authorities had arranged for two troops of cavalry (soldiers on horseback), the 3rd and 14th Dragoons, as well as special volunteer constables to control the crowd. When the crowd attacked the Council House in Corn Street near midnight, the 14th Dragoons charged. After two men were killed there was a lull during which the Dragoons were withdrawn.
