Working to the theme of 'Party Conference Resorts', Andrew Macara was commissioned by the House of Commons to paint six of the well-known seaside resorts around the country's coastline where the conferences are held; the other subjects are Blackpool, Torquay, Bournemouth, Llandudno and Scarborough. In the commission, although the artist was given free rein he was asked to include a well-known building or landmark in each canvas so as to identify each resort, the pier being chosen to represent Brighton.
