Born in Australia, the artist’s family moved to Manchester when he was three. He won a scholarship to study medicine at the University of Manchester, but ran off to London with Nina Forrest. In 1906 he enrolled at Chelsea School of Art, run by Augustus John and William Orpen, both outstanding artists. The following year he studied at Paris, married Nina and began to exhibit at the New English Art Club.
