Gerrit Willemsz Heda was the son of Willem Claesz Heda, who was a much more celebrated painter of still lifes than his son. However, 'Breakfast Still Life' remains a good example of a Dutch still life which, as much as anything, was a demonstration of the artist’s skill at painting highly realistic everyday objects with a mixture of materials, surface textures and shapes to show off the artist’s versatility. The subjects were very often foods and luxurious tableware as in this picture and there is also religious significance in the choice of objects. In this case, the bread and wine chalice are symbols of the Eucharist.
