An impressionist still life depicting a glazed enamal jug, small glass of wine or liquer, bread and cheese. Frederick William Jackson was a founding member of the New English Art Club, introducing French Impressionism to English painting. The background of the painting consists of a black and multicoloured floral tray, propped on its side. This flat, decorative object offered an unusual still life subject, contrasting with the more conventional objects in the foreground. The paintwork is somewhat textured and patched, reinforcing the impressionist style of working.
