This painting 'was inspired by a visit to Bookham Common, Surrey, where the Woodland glades provide an ideal haunt for the magnificent silver-washed fritillary. In late July and August the brambles at the glade edges are amass with butterflies.' Richard Tratt specialises in painting butterflies and moths in their landscape habitat. His trademark technique of scratching through wet paint to reveal a previously painted surface below is clear in this work. Tratt is a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and the Society of Botanical Artists. He began painting in his teens and attended Northwich College of Art and Dartington College of Arts (1970–1974). Tratt spends a great deal of time observing and sketching his subjects in their environment.
