Augustus John’s prestigious talent was identified while he was studying under Henry Tonks (1862–1937) and Frederick Brown (1851–1941) at the Slade School (1894–1898) where he was awarded a scholarship in 1896 and the Figure Drawing Prize in 1896/1897. It was during his time at the Slade that he executed this drawing, which demonstrates his gift as a draughtsman.
