When this painting was donated by Gwenhwyfar Davies in 1982, the artist commented 'I am so glad that Gwen Davies has let you have the painting of Roses. I remember it well as the most attractive of the flower paintings I did during this period. Nevertheless, now that I can look back to well over half-a-century of drawing and painting the few flower paintings I have done represent periods of gloom about my career as a practising artist. An interesting case for art-historians and psychologists no doubt.' The artist studied in Northampton and the Royal College of Art, graduating from the latter in 1934. He taught Art History at University College, Aberystwyth from 1936 to 1944 and later taught art at Northampton School of Art. In 1939 he became a member of the Society of Mural Painters.
