The title of the painting refers to Maclean's 1988 trip to North America and Boston in particular. The title refers to the Boston 'T' Underground System. There are references to and representations of whales in some of the niches inspired by the artist’s visit to maritime museums in New England. In the niche on the vertical section of the construction there are two rows of Ushabti figures. These statues of servants were placed in Egyptian tombs to carry out tasks for the deceased in the afterlife. These particular figures are modelled on pieces from the Boston Museum. Maclean was also affected by the concept of urbanisation to which, possibly, the model of the car in the first niche refers.
