On the left of the picture is a grassy cliff-top that curves from the bottom corner to the top right. There appears to be either a mast or a memorial on a hilltop. There are also several figures, some seated, some standing. The slope descends steeply to the sea: opposite is a similar hill which has a harbour wall and a jetty at the bottom, as well as a small sandy cove, where three boats are moored. In the centre of the picture is a large stone peninsular jutting into the sea, with waves breaking on it. It seems to be early evening, and the sky takes up top third of the picture. The donor, Ruth Edwards, née Escombe (1832–1907), was the artist's wife.
