The Diploma Work depicts Borthwick Castle on the east side of the village of Borthwick in Midlothian above the Gore Water. Borthwick Castle dates from c.1430 and was built by Sir William Borthwick. The family vacated the castle in the seventeenth century and it lay derelict for a time before being restored in the 1890s. It was converted to a hotel in 1973.
