John Fannen was a seascape painter who enjoyed painting all types of vessels, but particularly small sailing vessels. He worked mainly in oil but also in watercolour and gouache. While living in Sunderland he was an officer with the River Police, but also worked in Peterhead, Scotland. The 'Bonnie Maggie' PL30 was a Peel fishing lugger, and was painted at the height of the (then) prosperous fishing industry. The crew of the 'Bonnie Maggie' are listed in a census for 1881 at Port St Mary. The fishermen had a certificate to show they had been accounted for, as they were away fishing for mackerel in the Kinsale fishing area.
