There are few precedents for the work of Matthew Smith in British art. He studied with Matisse very briefly around 1910 and was associated with the group of mainly French artists who were labelled as the ‘Fauves’, or wild beasts. These artists were uninhibited in their use of violent colour contrasts and broad, expressionist brushstrokes.
