Blackshaw is a Northern Irish artist who was born in Glengormley, County Antrim. He studied at Belfast College of Art just after World War Two, and in 1951 he was awarded a scholarship to study art in Paris.

Blackshaw’s early works are very traditional in style, but as he gained confidence as an artist, he developed a more expressionist style. 'Blue Landscape' is an example of this type of work. It also shows Blackshaw’s approach to colour, where dark and light shades are used instead of different colours.
