This painting is inspired by the story of 'The Sorcerer and the Apprentice', which was the title of an exhibition at the Arts Council Gallery, Belfast and the Grundy Gallery, Blackpool. Ainsworth is fascinated by the magic and colour involved in the art of alchemy, and he states that he is 'naturally attracted to brightly coloured things' and believes that colour has healing and spiritual qualities.
