Thelma Hulbert was a much-loved art teacher at Camden School for Girls from 1944–1946. She was an early member of the Euston Road group of artists, established as a reaction against modernist theory. The group included Sir William Coldstream, Victor Pasmore (who painted Thelma), Vanessa Bell, Bill Brandt and many other prominent artists of the time. Thelma had a great love of Cornwall and spent time there with contemporaries, including Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. In 1962–1963 she had a successful solo show at the Whitechapel Gallery. Since her death in 1995, her home and studio – Elmsfield House in Honiton – has been transformed into the Thelma Hulbert Gallery. Two of her pictures are held by the Tate. Her pictures are mainly interiors and still lifes.
