Painted in black and white on terracotta-coloured card, this work depicts a steamship in profile sailing right to left. Wallis relied on his detailed knowledge of shipping to structure this work. He painted the complete hull of the vessel first before overlaying it with the sea.

Although self taught, Wallis developed an economy of line and sense of composition that belies the perception of him as naive. Artists such as Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood were drawn to Wallis's innate ability as an artist, which they valued for its directness and clarity.
