In this black house in Selkirkshire, William Laidlaw (1780–1845), author of the lyric 'Lucy's Flittin'', was born. Here also James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd, was in the service of the Laidlaws from 1790 until 1800. The old tower was built by the Douglas's in 1322. Sir James Douglas, who commanded a wing of the army at Bannockburn, had possession of the tower and it remained in the hands of the Douglas's till their forfeiture in 1455, when the lands and castle were annexed to the crown. In 1503 Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch was made Keeper of the Castle.
