This figure, found at the entrance to the Riverside Park, is a gatepost in the form of a man holding up a bird in both his hands. A second sculpture located further down the trail of a carved wooden man holding a fish – ‘Fish Man’ – formerly stood in the middle of a pond, but is no longer in situ. The trail began in 1997 when Art in Action approached the Bollin Valley Park as a venue for a sculpture trail. In the first year, the group received a lottery grant which enabled two permanent sculptures to be created – two wooden benches by Nigel Ross. There are now four permanent sculptures and one semi-permanent sculpture in the park. The aim of the project is to add a sculpture each year, to eventually create a trail for the whole of the Bollin Valley.
