The sculpture was probably produced using the branch of a tree and is part of a larger Chinese sculpture in the form of a tree with deity figures and birds. Its surface appears to be dark brown and varnished, with knolls and knobbles in areas. The sculpture has used the natural forms of the wood to form the body of the bird. The head has been carved and points upward on the right side with small claw raised up beneath. The beak has been chipped and eyes have been made using two small black beads. The bird is depicted standing on a long leg which extends downward toward the base.
