Bertrand Dawson (1864–1945) had a distinguished career as a physician and man of affairs. He attended Edward VII and George V; of the latter he wrote the celebrated bulletin announcing that ‘the King’s life is moving peacefully to its close’. Dawson was active in the British Medical Association’s plans to set up a Ministry of Health, which paved the way for the foundation of the National Health Service in 1948.
