A charming portrait of Bertha Clapshaw who was the daughter of Nathaniel Clapshaw, gardener to Mr Knight of Vernon House, Farnham. She often sat for Allen at the Farnham Art School. She was paid 6d an hour and saved her money to buy a pair of button-up boots.

She sits facing left, wearing a blue cotton country-style bonnet and a blue cotton 'rural' dress. She is against a background of white cherry blossom.
