Benjamin Marshall was apprenticed to the portrait painter Lemuel Francis Abbott, but in 1793 he decided to turn from portrait to animal paintings.
He had a long connection with Sporting Magazine: sixty of his paintings were engraved as illustrations for the magazine and he later, under the name Observator, became its racing correspondent. Prompted by his great love of racing, he moved to Newmarket in 1812, so that he 'could study the second animal in creation in all his grandeur, beauty and variety'.
