One of the greatest statesman of his age, who first made his mark as a flamboyant literary prodigy and gradually asserted his influence on the Tory Party through his outstanding abilities as a politician and orator. He became Prime Minister in 1868 and guided the Second Reform Bill through Parliament. His diplomatic triumphs included the purchase of the Suez Canal, and the Congress of Berlin.
