David Bomberg once observed that ‘There is no fixed way in which a line goes, but there is a relationship between the lines’. This is one of a series of drawings of the Inns of Court that he completed in the mid-to-late 1940s at the start of his highly influential teaching career. Towards the end of the war, he had taken over a post as drawing master at the Bartlett School of Architecture, followed by an appointment at the Borough Polytechnic between 1945 and 1953.

Here he uses strong, fluid charcoal strokes to trace the outline of the building to evoke a sense of mass – a concept that was central both to his own work and his teaching.
