Cadell was born in Edinburgh and trained as an artist in Paris at the turn of the century before returning to Scotland. His early works were Impressionist in style, but he was soon to develop a distinctive angular style using bold, bright colours. He was one of a small group of Scottish artists referred to as the Scottish Colourists and known as ‘the painters of modern Scotland’. Influenced by the work of Matisse and other avant-garde European artists, Cadell used strong colour contrasts to create vibrant landscapes and interiors.
