Ben Brierley was a weaver and writer in the Lancashire dialect. The statue is within about 100 yards (91.4 m) of the house where he was born, situated on Oldham Road and marked with a blue plaque. The scheme, and sculpture, were funded purely from external grants and include redesigned gardens using natural stone and heritage-style furniture, with a new clock and seating.
