This painting shows the dramatic power of the sea. It is painted by Henry Redmore who is recognised as one of the best marine painters of the 19th century. Redmore was born and lived in Hull where he began painting ships in the Humber estuary and in the harbours of Whitby and Scarborough. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and his paintings can be found in collections around Britain, including a number at the Ferens Gallery in his home town of Hull. This painting was professionally conserved in 1978. This revealed the small ships in the background that had been lost under layers of dust and dirt.
