Violent weather has fascinated many painters over the centuries and depictions of storms at sea have often verged on the abstract. Some artists drive paint frenetically across their canvas to mimic the turmoil of spray and foam, while others employ linear rhythms to evoke the relentless energy and destructive power of wave and flood. John Houston has devoted an extensive series of works to rain, wind and storm on the coast between Edinburgh and North Berwick, looking north over the Firth of Forth. This painting of a dying storm and breaking light is united by its colour. The horizon is distinctly shown but the sea provides no mirror-image of the sky above; it is still forced around in swirls and splintered waves by the power of its own mass.
