Algernon Talmage was primarily a landscape painter whose work can loosely be described as 'English Impressionist'. This is a recent term used for late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century artists emulating the French Impressionists in their free brushwork and concern with the effects of light. It is a style which is easy on the eye, was adopted by many traditional artists, and existed alongside the diversity of avant-garde artists inspired by more radical continental styles. The Pas de Calais is the French name for the Straits of Dover.
