As a regular in his local pub, the Clarendon Hotel, Rutherford sketched the locals having a pint and playing dominoes. These sketches formed the basis for the pictures, such as this work and its accompanying sketch.

These are intimate scenes of people enjoying a chat or a quiet drink. The figures' expressions and poses are caught with broad brush strokes. This gives them a spontaneity and liveliness that captures the mood and atmosphere in the pub.
