Design for a plate to J. C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, translated by Henry Hunter, London, 1789–1798, vol.III.ii., facing p.351. A published engraving contained in a chapter on eyes. Lavater assigns to the portrait sense and integrity, 'but the form of the whole, the forehead and particularly the eyes, discover a spirit of contradiction, and a decided propensity to conceit.'
