Alfred Munnings and his wife, Violet, were exiled from their East Anglian home to Exmoor during the Second World War. This gave Munnings the time and opportunity to concentrate on capturing the landscape subjects that he loved to paint. On one particular expedition, he had travelled a twelve-mile journey to Badgworthy Water only to find, on arrival, that he had forgotten his paintbrushes. The imaginative use of improvised tools combined with the masterly skills of an inventive colourist have resulted in creating a painting full of movement as the rushing water is captured tumbling over the rocks at full force. Munnings returned to the same spot the next day and painted the scene again this time with brushes. He felt there was little difference between the quality of the finished works.
