Inscribed on the front in the lower right corner in white paint: 'Wm Walls London July 1900'. Inscribed on the back in pencil: 'William Walls. Given to Z o L. 1893. By Constance'. The painting shows the head and shoulders of the animal. Scottish animal painter William Walls was born in Dunfermaline on 1 September 1860. He studied at the Life School in the Royal Scottish Academy and the Antwerp Academy. He painted animals in zoos, including London Zoo and in Antwerp, and he also painted in East Anglia and the Scottish Highlands. He worked in oils and watercolours. He was a regular exhibitor and showed 204 works at the Royal Scottish Academy, 18 at the Royal Academy in London and 98 at the Glasgow Institute. Walls lived at Corstorphine, Midlothian.
