This is a portrait of Augustus Egg (1816–1863), by his friend and fellow artist William Frith. Egg joined the amateur theatrical company that Dickens organised and regularly dined with the eminent author and his fellow actors. Himself a talented artist, Egg painted Dickens in the role of Charles Coldstream in the production of ‘Used Up!’.
